Tasting Note

90  2011  Occhipinti  Il Frappato  (IGT - Sicilia)  6/13/14 ($34)

100% Frappato  12.5% alc
Color: Medium red cherry to brick red. (3.0) Bouquet: Subtle clay earth and aged Italian hard cheese nuances complement zippy sweet/tart red and black cherries. (3.0) Body: Middleweight with excellent fruit and acidity, also smooth tannins in the background. Tangy mouthfeel. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor. (3.0)
Overall: Very consistent flavors from start to finish with persistent wet clay earthiness giving it distinctive Southern Italian character. This is met perfectly by tangy red and black cherry fruit. Only a middleweight, but shows excellent flavor concentration and aromatics for its weight. Their 2012 SP68 (Frappato/Nero d'Avola blend) is more expressive and concentrated at this point with a little more weight, but this could improve with time (3-4 years). (15.0)
