Tasting Note

90+   2009  Leon Barral   Faugères Jadis   (Languedoc)   12/7/13 ($40)

50% Carignan, 30% Syrah, 20% Grenache  14%alc    30-60 year old vines,    Biodynamic
Color: Deep purple blackberry. (3.0) Bouquet: Wild boysenberry, blueberry and blackberry with root beer, briar and other funky, forestal nuances. (3.5) Body: Coats the mouth beautifully with excellent fruit, acidity and tannins. Light heavyweight. (3.0) Flavor: Cedar and popcorn nuances combine with the wild berry fruit. Fruit flavors are more muted here, due to significant tannins. (3.0) Finish: Astringency and a little bitterness here. Lively minerality does linger though. (2.5)
Overall: Has many interesting flavors, similar to his regular Faugeres, but also has significant tannins that need time to integrate and smooth (4-6 years?). There is plenty of fruit here if all goes well. Can be enjoyed now with hearty fare, but patience in a cool cellar is what it needs. (15.0)
