Tasting Note

91     1996 Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Taillepieds 6/11/05 ($48)

Color: Pretty black cherry. Looks developed, but no clearing. (3.0) Bouquet: Strawberry and cranberry fruit with white truffles and tortonni candy. Complex and sophisticated. (3.5) Body: Acidity propelled fruit that is tart, but tasty with pretty Volnay complexity. It’s peak, but should hold for 2-3 more years. A solid middleweight. (3.0) Flavor: Tart cranberry with veal broth, truffles and cedary spice. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor step-for-step. Long and perfumy. (3.0)
Overall: A very solid Volnay. The best I’ve had in several years. Only time will tell if this can improve into a more profound wine. It has the stuffing to age for 1-3 more years, but will it improve? Classic Volnay style, but could be richer and more complex. Still very enjoyable. (15.5)
