Tasting Note

94   2013  D'Angelo  Valle del Noce Aglianico del Vulture (Basilicata)   12/26/17  ($34)

100% Aglianico    14% alc
Color: Deep red-brick garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Concentrated, ripe cherry fruit complemented by dusty, irony volcanic terroir and sweet cedar in the background. (3.5) Body: Light heavyweight with outstanding fruit and excellent acidity and loads of smooth tannins. Coats the mouth beautifully. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, with racy tang and interesting nuances. (3.5) Finish: Parallels flavor, long, elegant and interesting. (3.5)
Overall: This was drunk next to the '13 Canneto and when first opened, they seemed about equal in quality, but the Canneto, which has more cedary French oak (its most prominent characteristic), remained about the same with air, while the concentrated fruit and complexity of the Valle del Noce got better and better over the course of 3-4 hours. It also expressed its volcanic terror very convincingly, while the French oak of the Canneto seemed to get in the way the more you drank it. I enjoyed the Canneto very much, but this wine is classic.
