Tasting Note

91   2012  D'Angelo  Aglianico del Vulture (Basilicata)   12/21/17  ($17)

   13.5% alc
Color: Medium deep red-brick garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Ripe persimmon and sweet dried cherry fruit complemented by a potpourri of cooking and baking spices, being sweet and savory at the same time. Also plenty of iron and volcanic mineral terroir. (3.5) Body: Solid middleweight plus with excellent fruit, acidity and vigorous yet smooth tannins. Coats the mouth beautifully. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but not quite as expressive at this point. Still shows very nice fruit and some spice. (3.0) Finish: Parallels bouquet, long and savory. (3.5)
Overall: An Aglianico that is at its best now, showing ripe, tasty persimmon and dried cherry fruit combined with an exotic mix of sweet and savory spices mixed with volcanic, iron-infused earthiness. The tannins are also persistent, meeting the fruit with a perfect balance. Drink now and in the next few years. Great value! (16)
