Tasting Note

92    1996 Serafin Pere et Fils Gevrey-Chambertain VV 6/19/05 ($35)

Color: Deep raspberry with a touch of onion skin. Looks ready, but solid. (3.0) Bouquet: Fresh lively mineral and smooth spice with rich raspberry and black cherry fruit, as well as elegant truffle thrown in. (3.0) Body: Excellent acidity with rich, forward fruit and classy complexity. A very solid middleweight.(3.0) Flavor: Excellent acidity and smooth tannins supporting attractive cranberry and black cherry fruit with rich black truffle and wet leaves complexity in a classy package. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor, but richer and fuller with length and class. (4.0)
Overall: A fantastic village wine that is aging very gracefully. A classy peak G.C. that exhibits old vines complexity. Can’t wait to try Serafin’s Premier Cru G.C. from this vintage. Should hold and may even improve in the next 1-2 years, but very fine right now. (16.0)
