Tasting Note

92   2002  Serafin  Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny (1er Cru)   4/15/17  ($65)

   13.5% alc
Color: Medium deep black cherry with browning at the rim. (3.0) Bouquet Black cherry/ vanilla with interesting forestal flavors driven by minerality. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight with excellent acidity and very good fruit. Silky/tangy/minerally mouthfeel. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but not as fruity. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor step for step with minerals lingering. (3.0)
Overall: This Red Burgundy has elegance and excellent minerality, but could use more fruit concentration. Minerals and acidity do give it excellent energy and life, more than the last time I tasted it about a year and a half ago. Excellent food wine with gout de vieux and elegant complexity that help to make up for the lack of fruit. Very enjoyable, but not as good as the Corbeaux from tis vintage. (15.5)
