Tasting Note

90+   2009  Selvapiana  Bucerchiale  Chianti Rufina Riserva   9/2/13 ($30)

  14.5% alc
Color: Medium deep garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Lean and mean with excellent acidity, flowery/dusty black cherry and some anise/black licorice. (3.0) Body: Excellent acidity and tannins support sufficient fruit. Solid middleweight to light heavyweight. Tangy with tannins that coat. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but not as expressive. (3.0) Finish: Long, but austere at this point, needs time. (3.0)
Overall: There's excellent Tuscan Sangiovese character in this wine. But definitely young and austere and does not have enough youthful fruit to really make it a pleasure yet. Goes well with food even now, but needs 4-6 years to be at its best. I loved the 2004 vintage of this wine, which was outstanding right from release and is even better now. Other vintages I've had age well, but tend to be austere when young. (15.0)
