Tasting Note

95   2004  Selvapiana  Bucerchiale Chianti Rufina Riserva   7/11/15  ($30)

   14% alc
Color: Very deep garnet with red brick browning, but not much clearing. (3.5) Bouquet: Dusty Tuscan terroir with dried cherry fruit, interesting cigarbox and ground nuts (pistaccio and almond). (3.5) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent acidity, fruit and smooth tannins. Shows classic Sangiovese austerity combined with impressive elegance. Rich mouthfeel. (3.5) Flavor: Spicy black pepper-infused, mature fruit and cigarbox. Not quite as expressive as bouquet. (3.0) Finish: Parallels bouquet with aromatic length. Spice lingers along with an interesting dusty clay nuance. (3.5)
Overall: This is classic Sangiovese, showing dusty/slight clay terroir combined with very dry, but intense cherry fruit and integrated cigarbox. Textbook Chianti Riserva that's beautiful. It cries out for veal or wild boar based Tuscan dishes. At its best now and in the next few years. (17)
