Tasting Note

93  2008 Ridge  Monte Bello  Chardonnay   12/24/11 ($55)

100% Chardonnay  14.1% alc
Color: Golden with hints of brown, probably from oak. (3.5) Bouquet: Pine, poached pear and butterscotch with prominent minerals. (3.5) Body: Excellent fruit and acidity with plenty of integrated oak. Heavyweight. (3.5) Flavor: The minerals and acidity are very lively and enjoyable. The pine and butterscotch oak are also tasty, but the fruit is a little restrained at present. Also has a slight alcohol flavor, but not hot. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor with tang and spice lingering. (3.0)
Overall: Shows the mineral character and concentration of the vineyard, and is balanced, elegant and ageworthy. The pear fruit is restrained at this point. The pine/butterscotch oak is integrated into the minerals, but more prominent fruit would make this more charming. Not quite the '06, but still terrific stuff. Needs time, 5-6 years. (16.5)
