Tasting Note

93+   2012  Ridge  Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Cruz Mtns)   10/12/15  ($50)

76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot   13.5% alc
Color: Very deep purple garnet. (3.5) Bouquet: Roasted nuts and cedar complement concentrated cassis fruit and lively tannins. (3.5) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent fruit, acidity and tannins. Coats the mouth beautifully. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet with tangy tannins. (3.5) Finish: Not quite as intense as the flavor, but cassis and roasted nuts linger very nicely. (3.0)
Overall: Shows a wonderful balance of fruit, acidity and smooth tannins. If I were to compare this to past vintages, such as those from the '90s, I'd say that the tannins are not quite as fierce, but its quality stands up with the best vintages. Only time will tell if it will age as well, but let it be said that Chateau Lafite has always been known as a graceful ager that can also be charming when young. I would like to think that this wine is carved from a similar mold. (17.0)
