Tasting Note

94  2001  Ridge  Monte Bello  (Santa Cruz Mtns)   9/20/14 ($90)

56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot  14.2% alc
Color: Very deep garnet with very slight onion skin at rim. (3.5) Bouquet: Similar subtle black truffle nuance as the Deux Terres, but more ripe cassis fruit and more overall concentration. (3.5) Body: Heavyweight with outstanding fruit, acidity and smooth tannins. Silky mouthfeel that coats very nicely. (3.5) Flavor: Delicious and smooth. Ripe for Ridge, but beautifully balanced and a total pleasure. (3.5) Finish: Long and delicious with loads of inky cassis fruit. (3.5)
Overall: An outstanding Bordeaux blend with the high percentage of Merlot making it particularly lush and fruit forward. Despite this, it has enough structure underneath to develop and possibly improve in the next 5 years. But the cassis fruit is so concentrated and delicious right now, so why chance it. It does show some subtle pen ink and black truffle nuances, but this vintage is mainly about fruit, not being as complex as Monte Bello can be. (17.5)
