Tasting Note

92  2011  Raul Perez  Vico  Mencia (Bierzo)  8/1/14 ($30)

100% Mencia    13.5% alc
Color: Deep purple black raspberry juice. (3.0) Bouquet: Sweet black cherry, pomegranate with hints of papaya and guava. Subtle cedar in the background. (3.5) Body: Solid middleweight with excellent fruit and acidity. Tangy, silky mouthfeel. (3.0) Flavor: Racy acidity propels the delicious fruit with musky old vines and subtle spice nuances. (3.5) Finish: Long, elegant finish with attractive spice. Not quite as intense as the flavor. (3.0)
Overall: Shows impressive old vines fruit purity with black cherry, pomegranate, papaya and guava. Less weight and ripeness than the 2010, making it more elegant and racy. Both vintages are of equal quality and outstanding for the price. (16.0)
