Tasting Notes

93   2000  Poliziano  Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone   6/26/10 ($40 regular, $20 close out)

          14% alc
Color: Very deep garnet. Looks ready, but no onion skin or clearing. (3.5) Bouquet: Concentrated black cherry syrup and sweet pistaschio and almond with cedar and tannin underneath. Delicious and powerful. (3.5) Body: Coats the mouth big time with concentrated fruit and substantial smooth tannins. Also excellent acidity. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet. (3.5) Finish: Parallels flavor, but tannin adds a little bitter astringency. Black licorice lingers. (3.0)
Overall: An outstanding Vino Nobile that rivals many a top notch Brunello at $70-$100. A miraculous wine from this mediocre vintage. Obviously the retailer or distributor was having trouble getting rid of it, based on the closeout price. Still a little young with some tannin to resolve. It could achieve greatness in the next 2-5 years, but it's delicious already. Serve with red or roasted meats or a grilled Portobello. (17.0)
