Tasting Note

87+   2014  Peillot  Bugey Pinot Noir    8/14/15  ($17)

  100% Pinot Noir 12% alc
Color: Deep purple raspberry to black raspberry. (3.0) Bouquet: Sappy black raspberry with some game and subtle herbs. Slight white chalk and Gamay-like foxiness. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight with very good fruit and excellent acidity. Tangy in the mouth with subtle tannins underneath. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but more restrained. Shows some interesting flowery perfume. (2.5) Finish: Fruit is drier and most restrained here. (2.5)
Overall: An interesting, change-of-pace Pinot that should appeal to lover's of red Burgundy and Beaujolais. Has flowery, aromatic black raspberry fruit making it taste like Pinot Noir, yet has sappy, gamey, foxy flavors that remind me of Beaujolais. Has elegance and subtle nuances of game, white chalk and flowers with excellent flavor intensity for its weight and subtle tannins underneath. Very young and closed at this point needing hours of decanting to open or give it 2-5 years of cellaring. (14)
