Tasting Note

94   2006  Mount Eden   Estate Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mtns)   1/28/18  ($40)

   14.2% alc
Color: Bright 14 kt gold. (3.0) Bouquet: Creamy charred oak and oily herb complement elegant apple and pear fruit. A little restrained at this point. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with outstanding fruit and acidity. Silky mouthfeel that coats big time. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but more distinctive and intense. Fruit and minerality come to the fore with a nuance of toast. (3.5) Finish: Spice and mineral intertwine with the fruit beautifully. Very long and intense, yet elegant. Best part. (3.5)
Overall: What a seriously intense yet elegant Chardonnay in a very Burgundian style. I love the minerality, oily herb and toast nuances. The fruit is creamy and all there, but not the least bit sweet or buttery, i.e., not CA-like at all. Reminiscent of Meursault. Probably at its best now, but should hold for a few more years. (16.5)
