Tasting Note

91+  2007  Montevertine (Toscana IGT)   11/2/12 ($38)

Sangiovese with small amounts of Canaiolo Nero and Colorino  13% alc
Color: Medium deep black cherry. (3.0) Bouquet: Very aromatic, sweet black cherry and Torrone (pistachio/vanilla) candy with elegant Tuscan terroir complexity of fennel, herbs and nutty/dusty nuances. (3.5) Body: Solid middleweight with excellent acidity and very good fruit. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but shows less fruit. (3.0) Finish: Long with complexity and elegance more like the bouquet, but not quite as expressive. (3.0)
Overall: A very elegant and complex Chianti-Classico blend. Technically this should be labelled a CC-Riserva, but Montevertine is a producer with a rebellious streak, refusing to acknowledge DOC rules. Shows red and black cherry fruit with pistachio and vanilla flavors and distinctive herb and earth complexity. Great with veal or chicken Marsala. Drinks like a fine CC Riserva, but more classy. Excellent now, but may improve in the next 2-4 years. (15.5)
