Tasting Notes

88  2008  Montes  Malbec  (Colchagua Valley, Chile)  5/28/10 ($12)

  14% alc
Color: Deep garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Roasted coffee beans, lively cedar and herbal nuances complement rich blackberry fruit. Excellent. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight to light heavyweight with excellent balance, even some tannin. Coats the mouth. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but not quite as giving with some astringency. (2.5) Finish: Parallels bouquet with smooth, rich coffee and blackberry lingering. (3.0)
Overall: A very tasty Malbec, better than most from Argentina in the $20 and under range. This has excellent structure and balance, particularly for the price. Its rich, smooth roasted coffee bean and blackberry flavors pair well with red meat, grilled foods and other hearty fare. It should remain this good for a couple of years at least. Outstanding value. (14.5)
