Tasting Note

92   2013  Matassa  Rouge (Cotes Catalanes)   5/28/16  ($30)

mostly Carignan with   12% alc
Color: Medium raspberry to black cherry. (3.0) Bouquet: Wet leaves, mushrooms, subtle clay, spiced cola and sweet/tart cherry and raspberry fruit. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight with a tangy mouthfeel. Excellent fruit and acidity. Very slight frizzante. (3.0) Flavor: More minerally, juicy and expressive than the 2012. (3.5) Finish: Parallels flavor with complexity having surprising length for its weight. (3.5)
Overall: The juicy cherry/raspberry fruit and nuances of wet leaves, mushrooms, subtle clay, lively minerals and spiced cola (Dr Pepper) are even more expressive and fresh than the excellent 2012. Not sure if this is due to the vintage or just that it's a year younger. Again, reminiscent of a ready-to-drink Burgundy from the Cote de Beaune costing $60+. Delicoius, elegant and interesting. Drink now and in the next few years. Outstanding value! (16)
