Tasting Note

92   2002  Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet  (Pauillac)   10/12/13 ($20)

  13 % alc
Color: Deep garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Cedar and cassis that's concentrated but muted. Also Pauillac clay and forestal nuances. (2.5) Body: Heavyweight with excellent tannins, fruit and acidity. Has a rich mouthfeel that coats. (3.5) Flavor: Richer cassis and pen ink come on here. (3.0) Finish: Even more intense than flavor with ink and violets lingering. Very long. (3.5)
Overall: An outstanding second wine, particularly considering the less than stellar vintage. A tribute to Pontet-Canet quality. Shows dusty tannins that have finally smoothed, combined with classic Pauillac flavors of pen ink, clay and forestal nuances, all surrounding concentrated cassis fruit. Violet nuances linger in the finish. Outstanding value, but took patience. Probably at its best right now, but should hold for several more years. (16.0)
