Tasting Note

88   2015  Lapierre  Morgon (Cru Beaujolais)   11/4/16  ($25)

13.5 % alc
Color: Deep purple raspberry. (3.0) Bouquet: Sweet black cherry and red licorice fruit with black truffle and game complexity. Ripe. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight to light heavyweight with excellent fruit and minerality. Rich mouthfeel that coats. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but the ripe, almost jammy fruit gets in the way of the complexity. (2.5) Finish: Long, but again not as distinctive as other vintages due to the ripeness. (2.5)
Overall: A ripe, tasty Cru Beaujolais with some interesting complexity underneath, but the ripeness causes it to be less expressive. Almost tastes like a DuBoeuf Cru Beaujolais or a Languedoc with all that ripeness. 2015 is a big, ripe vintage and it seems that even all of the terroir and distinction of Lapierre's Morgon couldn't totally rise above it. Don't get me wrong, the quality is excellent and probably as good as the 2014, but stylistically this is not my kind of Beaujolais. I still enjoyed it with food. (14)
