Tasting Note

86       2005  Justin  Obtuse  (Paso Robles)    2/14/08 ($16 - 375mL)

Cabernet Sauvignon plus "Portuguese Portwine varieties"    18%alc
Color: Deep purple garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Grapy, yeasty and alcoholic with bright, ripe red and black cherry fruit. Heat is forward, but propels fruit. (2.5) Body: Middleweight. The alcohol makes it seem heavier, but could use more structure. It coats the mouth with fruit and alcohol, but not ageworthy structure. (2.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet. Rich and tasty, but has heat issues. (2.5) Finish: Has decent length, but is just sweet and simple. (2.5)
Overall: The bouquet on this reminds me of some young Recioto di Valpolicella dessert wines I've had, but the flavor and finish are simply sweet and fruity, lacking structure and complexity. A ruby port from a fine producer is as good or better and is also more true to what port should taste like, since this wine claims to be a "Port style wine". (13.0)
