Tasting Note

88+(?) 2007 Alain Jaume  Domaine Grand Veneur Les Champauvins Cotes du Rhone Villages  9/6/09 ($20)

  15% alc
Color: Deep purple-garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Dried herbs complementing blackberry jam and black plum with excellent acidity. A little reserved. (2.5) Body: Solid middleweight plus with excellent fruit and acidity, also very good tannin. Coats the mouth. (3.0) Flavor: Black licorice and a little motor oil add depth to the jammy blackberry fruit. Dried herbs more in the background here than in the bouquet. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor, but alcohol and herbal flavors add some bitterness here. (2.5)
Overall: Very good, very young CdR Villages with concentrated black licorice and blackberry jam fruit, supported by excellent acidity. The combination of dried herbs and high alcohol add some bitterness. A bit rustic at present, but should smooth with time (2-5 years). Decant for 2 hours if drinking now. (14.0)    (Thanks for the sample Charlie!)
