Tasting Note

95   1996   Louis Jadot  Gevrey-Chambertin  Clos Saint-Jacques   1/18/15  ($75)

  13% alc
Color: Deep black cherry with some browning and slight clearing. Looks ready to drink. (3.5) Bouquet: Spiced beef broth and minerality complement carmelized black cherry fruit and forest floor/wet leaves nuances. (3.5) Body: Light Heavyweight with excellent fruit, acidity and minerality. Tangy mouthfeel that coats with healthy tannins underneath. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but slightly restrained. Opens more with air. (3.0) Finish: Long and silky with some Gevrey-Chambertin power left, yet elegant. (3.5)
Overall: This is classic, top-notch single vineyard Gevrey-Chambertin. It’s peak, but still needed a 2-hour decant to be totally open. Shows a beautiful combination of complexity, elegance and power. Intense minerality, spiced beef broth and spicy black cherry intertwine with wet leaves/forest floor nuances. This still has a few years left in it, maybe 5 or 6, and might even improve. Decant for now drinking. A great Burgundy. (17.0)
