Tasting Notes

91+(?)   2007  Imagery  Lagrein  Paso Robles  7/11/10 ($40)

  100%Lagrein   14.4% alc
Color: Purple black. Dense. (4.0) Bouquet: Red meat and black currant. Dry and restrained after the last two wines. (2.5) Body: Dense fruit with very good tannin and acidity. Really coats the mouth beautifully. (3.5) Flavor: More expressive fruit than the bouquet with acidity lifting the black plum and black currant. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor. (3.0)
Overall: Concentrated fruit that is smooth, but youthfully restrained at the same time. Reminds me of a dense Petite Sirah, but less brooding. As is typical of reds from Paso Robles, I'd like to see more structure for aging, but the structure is still very good. Very tasty stuff that is meant to go with red meat. Could improve in the next few years. May go longer, but my lack of experience with this obscure grape from north-eastern Italy combined with the questionable agability of most reds from Paso Robles makes me cautious. I was expecting it to open and get more complex in the glass, but it never did. (16.0)
