Tasting Note

95   1996  Henri Gouges   Nuits St Georges Les Vaucrains   11/11/16  ($55)

   13% alc
Color: Deep black cherry to garnet. Fantastic for a 20 yr old Burgundy. (4.0) Bouquet: Black truffles and iron infused terroir complementing concentrated black cherry and black raspberry fruit. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent fruit, acidity and smooth tannins underneath. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but fruit and cooking spices are more expressive. (3.5) Finish: Parallels flavor step-for-step. Smooth, iron-infused tannins linger. (3.5)
Overall: This is top-notch Nuits St Georges with iron, black truffle and cooking spice terroir prevalent, supported by smooth, substantial tannins underneath. Fortunately, it has the concentrated black cherry and black raspberry fruit to meet. A fantastic 20 yr old Red Burgundy. Not as classy as some, but shows impressive structure and balance. When I last drank this wine 7 years ago, it was a bit tannic and closed. It has opened beautifully and is probably at its best now and in the next few years. (17.5)
