Tasting Note

90        2002 V.Girardin Santenay Les Gravieres 10/23/04 ($26)

Color: Medium Burgundy robe. Prettier, but not as dark as the Les Peuillets. (3.0) Bouquet: Wonderful acidity propelling black truffles and red raspberry fruit with pistachio flavor from oak. (3.0) Body: Acidity, terroir and fruit meld together very nicely. Acidity, not tannin, will keep it together as it ages. (3.0) Flavor: Intense acidity propels terroir and fruit. The fruit is ripe, but could be more concentrated. As acidity calms with a little age, the fruit should come through more. (3.0) Finish: Acidity drives the fruit and truffle/pistachio complexity. Long, interesting and very tasty. (3.0)
Overall: Inspired by terroir and driven by acidity. A classic Burgundy that almost comes off more like an intense, young white Burgundy, due to being acidity propelled. Can be enjoyed now, but should improve in the next 2-3 years. Has less concentration and body than the Les Peuillets, but riper fruit and more classic Burgundy character. (15.0)
