Tasting Note

91   2002  Vincent Girardin  Savigny-les-Beaune Les Serpentieres  4/25/14 ($30)

   13.5% alc
Color: Medium deep raspberry with some browning at the rim, but no significant clearing. (3.0) Bouquet: Aromatic basil, white pepper and veal broth nuances. Pretty. (3.5) Body: Excellent acidity and minerality with sufficient fruit. Middleweight with a tangy mineral mouthfeel. (3.0) Flavor: Paralles bouquet, but not as complex. minerality combined with tart, somewhat musky raspberry fruit. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor step for step with minerals and veal broth lingering. (3.0)
Overall: A fully mature red Burgundy with intense minerality and interesting herbal nuances of basil and white truffle. Has sufficient tart, musky raspberry fruit, but this wine is not about fruit. It was very appealing as a young wine, but went through a long closed phase, before the secondary nuances of maturity came out. What a nice surprise! Are Pinot Noirs from other places capable of this type of metamorphosis? I'm not so sure. (15.5)
