Tasting Note

92+   2011  Fontefico   Costetoste Terre de Chieti Aglianico (IGT)   4/21/18  ($32)

100% Aglianico    15.0% alc
Color: Dense black garnet. (3.5) Bouquet: Concentrated boysenberry and black plum complemented by nuances of cocoa, cedar, dried herbs and dusty earth. (3.0) Body: Heavyweight with excellent fruit and loads of healthy tannins. Dense mouthfeel that coats beautifully. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet with juicy tobacco in the mix. (3.5) Finish: A little less distinctive showing a touch of heat. (3.0)
Overall: Similar to their '12 Montepulciano Riserva, this shows very concentrated, almost dried fruit flavors, combined with cedar. The fruit here just isn't as pure as the Montepulciano. This also has dried herb, cocoa, dusty earth and tobacco nuances not found in the other wine, making it more complex. Also has more prominent tannins than the Montipulciano as one would expect from an Aglianico. This is outstanding now after decanting a couple of hours and should improve in the next 3-5 years. (17)
