Tasting Note

90+ 2002 Foley Santa Rita Hills P.N. Rancho Santa Rosa 3/17/06 ($27)

14.0% alc
Color: Pretty medium garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Excellent acidity, propelling Burgundian-style tart cherry fruit with beef broth and sweet cinnamon spice nuances. (3.0) Body: Excellent acidity with well-balanced fruit and just enough subtle, cedary oak complementing. A middleweight with not even a hint of alcoholic heat. (3.0) Flavor: A burst of sweet, yet tart cherry fruit with a wonderful sense of life and minerality that is very Burgundian, as well as a hint of mint. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor, with excellent length. Very aromatic. (3.0)
Overall: My God does this taste like Burgundy. Very reminiscent of a fine Savigny-les-Beaune, but with richer fruit. This is ready to go with excellent fruit, acidity and balance. Not particularly complex and could be more concentrated, but outstanding for the price. It has a minerally terroir component that is compelling. Drink now and in the next 2 years. (15.0)

Note: Drank again in Fall 2007. It has improved to a 91+ with more ripe black cherry cola fruit, still being perfectly balanced with excellent acidity. It still has potential to improve in the next 1-3 years. Delicious.
