Tasting Note

92 1993 Faiveley Chambertain Clos de Beze 1/15/05 ($80)

Color: Deep garnet with a healthy amount of onion skin, but still very dark for its age. (4.0) Bouquet: Rich, smoky (oak) concentrated P.N. Excellent size, but silky at the same time with beef broth and mint. (4.0) Body: Light heavyweight with prominent smoky cigarbox and developed P.N. fruit just underneath. A bit too much oak. (3.0) Flavor: Rosemary and black pepper on top of tannic dried blackberry fruit. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor, but fruit is overpowered by dry oaky tannin. (2.0)
Overall: An excellent Red B., which shows the power of a Grand Cru. Also shows interesting complexity and some richness, but is over oaked with cedary, dry tannin in the finish. May improve if the fruit can hold out. (1-3 years)
