Tasting Note

93   1996   Faiveley  Corton Clos des Cortons    12/28/16  ($90)

   13% alc
Color: Deep black raspberry with only a hint of browning at the rim. Impressive for 20. (3.5) Bouquet: Herbs, menthol, beef broth and iron minerality complement cherry and raspberry fruit. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent acidity/minerality and tannins. Fruit is sufficient. Mouthfeel is lively and tangy. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but more expressive with intense minerality and the acidity propels the fruit. (3.5) Finish: Tangy minerality and elegant, mature fruit linger. Could be longer and more intense. (3.0)
Overall: Wonderful structure of acidity and iron minerality holding it together with smooth, persistent tannins underneath. The red cherry and raspberry fruit are still there, but certainly not the highlight of the show. Nuances of herbs, menthol and beef broth also keep your interest. A big wine which has gained the elegance of maturity. What's most impressive is how well the structure, minerality and complex nuances cut through and pair so well with food. Was a bit closed at first, but opened in the glass after about an hour. Drink now and in the next few years. (16.5)
