Tasting Note

92+   2014  Domaine du Closel  Savennieres La Jalousie (Loire)   8/26/16  ($20)

100% Chenin Blanc   13% alc
Color: Medium gold. Bright for Savennieres. (3.5) Bouquet: Waxy pear, dried pineapple, iodine and beeswax are fresh and lively. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent fruit and acidity. Not as big as the '13, but more balanced. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but more charming. The brightness of the fruit makes it delicious. (3.5) Finish: Long and tangy with fruit and minerals lingering. (3.5)
Overall: The best vintage of this wine I've tasted. Even better than the '11, which was my favorite up to this point. The pear and beeswax fruit are very bright and expressive and the excellent acidity and minerality balance it perfectly. The fruit does have a ripeness to it compared to other producers (such as Baumard or Chateau d'Epire), but no botrytus is present. A joy to drink now, just don't serve it too cold, and should develop and possibly improve over the next 10 years. Great value!!! (16.5)
