Tasting Note

92   2009  Domaine du Closel  Savennierres Clos du Papillon (Loire)   3/18/16  ($32)

100% Chenin Blanc   14% alc
Color: Deep yellow hay. (3.0) Bouquet: Vanilla-infused candlewax with lively minerality. Somewhat restrained at present. (3.0) Body: Light Heavyweight with outstanding minerality/acidity. Coats the mouth very nicely with plenty of fruit. (3.5) Flavor: Concentrated, persistent flavors of candle wax, vanilla extract and minerals. Wonderful. (3.5) Finish: Parallels flavor, but some bitterness holds it back. Not a bad thing, but needs time to integrate. (3.0)
Overall: A combination of dry candlewax pear, minerals and tart acidity (classic Savennierres) intermix with vanilla extract and flowery botrytus (unique characteristics of the winery's style) to make a compelling single vineyard Chenin Blanc. Very fine for now drinking showing elegance and concentration, but could certainly improve with a few more years bottle age. (16)
