Tasting Note

87   2001 DeLoach Russian River Valley Gewurz(early harvest) 6/25/04($15)

Color: Light yellow, looks healthy for a Gewurz, but could be deeper.(2.0) Bouquet: Pretty mandarin orange and honeyed flowers combined with dry, stony nuances and cinnamon.(3.5) Body: Light middleweight, but solid and will age for a year or so.(2.0) Flavor: Tasty mandarin orange, but does not exhibit the complexity and aromatics that one might expect based upon the bouquet.(2.5) Finish: Long, spicy finish for its size with ginger and cinnamon combined with mandarin orange. A little alcohol present.(3.0)
Overall: Very good California Gewurz, but I was expecting more concentration from this vintage and producer. Still very enjoyable and delicate, but no better than the 2000. It may gain a little weight with a year of bottle age. Should be served no colder than 55 ?F. The 2001 Gundlach- Bundchu is still the one to beat for me.(13.0)
