Tasting Note

89   2010  D'Angelo  Aglianico del Vulture (Basilicata)   12/26/13 ($16)

100% Aglianico  13.5 % alc
Color: Dark brick red. (3.0) Bouquet: Volcanic mineral terroir, black licorice, violets and pepper nuances complement bittersweet black cherry fruit. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight plus with excellent tannins and very good fruit. Well balanced. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet. Fruit gets a little sweeter here. (3.0) Finish: A little rustic with bitter herbs. (2.5)
Overall: A well structured Aglianico del Vulture with bitter herb tannins and black cherry fruit. A more traditional style, which I tend to prefer. The violets and other aromatic nuances combined with healthy tannins are Barolo-like, living up to Aglianico's reputation as the Nebbiolo of the South. A fine example and an excellent value too. Drink now with a decant or let age for 2-4 years. Should soften and gain more complexity with time. (14.5)
