88+     2002 Columbia Crest  Walter Clore Private Reserve    1/24/09 ($30)

14.1% alc       Wahluke Slope (50%), Horse Heaven Hills (50%)
Color: Deep garnet. No clearing. (3.0) Bouquet: Cassis, chocolate, tart acidity with some cedary tannin and herbs. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight with very good structure, but a bit too much chalky acidity. Does not coat the mouth. (2.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but tart acidity sticks out with fruit in the background. (3.0) Finish: Parallels bouquet step-for-step with tart cassis, chocolate and hints of tobacco and mint lingering. (3.0)
Overall: A very good Bordeaux blend having charming Merlot fruit and chocolate with Cabernet umph. The acidity propels the fruit and herbal nuances, but is a bit too tart and chalky. Could improve in the next couple of years, but I wouldn't bet on it. (14.5)
