90 2016 Chidaine Touraine Rosé (Loire) 7/17/17 ($14)
Grolleau, Pinot Noir, Gamay 13.5% alc
Color: Medium salmon. (3.0) Bouquet: Strawberry and pear lifted by mineral and acidity. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight plus with excellent fruit, acidity and viscosity. Slightly off-dry, but very well balanced. Rich, tangy mouthfeel. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet. (3.0) Finish: Best part. More expressing and distinctive than the flavor. (3.0)
Overall: I have to admit that most rosé bores me. Either sweet and non-descript (the cheap stuff) or dry and minerally, but with little expressive fruit character (Provençal comes to mind). This wine does not fit either of those stereotypes and for that alone I like it. In addition, it has true Loire character (Chidaine style) and expressive fruit. I shouldn't be surprised that Chidaine can pull off a unique wine that rises above the rest. He achieves this with most of his wines. (15.0)
