Tasting Note

90+   2015  Chateau d'Epire   Savennieres (Loire)    5/15/18  ($22)

100% Chenin Blanc   13.5% alc
Color: Yellow straw with a hint of copper. (3.0) Bouquet: Intense mineral, wax pear and green apple complemented by moss and wet stones. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent acidity and very good fruit, but a little tart. Dry, tangy mouthfeel that coats. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet with more moss and tartness. Needs time to calm down and smooth the rough edges. (2.5) Finish: Long with non-stop minerality. Briney with an grainy texture. Intense. (3.5)
Overall: Very young and austere Savennieres that needs time in a cool cellar. The brook stones and moss nuances are particularly interesting, I just wish the wax pear and green apple had a little more sweetness to counter the tartness. An intense wine that really needs food if drinking now. Would go well with oysters/clams on the half shell or cerviche. Revisit in 5-7 years. (15.0)
