Tasting Note

90    2004 Leone de Castris  Salice Salentino Riserva  9/21/09 ($14)

  13.5% alc
Color: Medium deep garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Dried herbs, sweet black licorice and black cherry. (3.0) Body: Solid middleweight with a silky mouthfeel. Excellent balance of fruit to acid and even some tannin. Lively in the mouth. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet step-for-step. (3.0) Finish: Again, parallels bouquet with impressive persistence. The licorice/cherry fruit is even sweeter here. (3.0)
Overall: An excellent Salice with more body, weight and character than most. I wish Taurino's was still this good. This should appeal to lovers of both Cotes du Rhone and Chianti, showing some of the nuances of the former and some of the tangy, food-friendly Italian character of the latter. Outstanding for the price. (15.0)
