Tasting Note

93   2014  Carlisle   Steiner Gruner Veltliner   7/21/18  ($30)

100% Gruner Veltliner   14.1% alc 174cases
Color: Persistent yellow tending towards light gold. (3.0) Bouquet: Key lime, pear, oatmeal and subtle vanilla with minerality. (3.5) Body: Solid middleweight plus with excellent fruit and acidity. Rich, tangy mouthfeel. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet with outstanding precision to all the flavors. (3.5) Finish: Similar but slightly less expressive than the flavor with quinine lingering. (3.0)
Overall: An outstanding Gruner that tastes very Austrian with just a little CA ripeness added. The key lime, pear, oatmeal and vanilla flavors are very precise with minerality and acidity keeping it light on its feet. I've tasted the other 3 vintages of this wine ('11 was the first) and this may be my favorite with its brightness and balance. Drink now and in the next few years. (16.5)
