Tasting Note

93   2013  Carlisle   Pagani Ranch Alicante Bouschet    7/22/18  ($36)

78% Alicante Bouschet, 22% Zinfandel   14.9% alc 100cases
Color: Opaque purple-black plum. Looks like Petite Sirah (3.5) Bouquet: Ripe blackberry and black plum preserves with a hint of black licorice
. (3.5) Body: Heavyweight with excellent fruit, smooth tannins and sufficient acidity. Viscous, smooth mouthfeel. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but less expressive. (3.0) Finish: Long, but slightly flat compared to the bouquet. (3.0)
Overall: This is my first experience with an Alicante based wine. An interesting red that I really enjoyed. It shows some of the density, mouthfeel and fruit of a Petite Sirah, but with less overall structure and dryer. Reminds me of Sagrantino, but with CA fruit. The ripe blackberry and black plum preserves combined with some black licorice are compelling. Drink now and in the next 5 years. The bouquet is my favorite part at this point. A unique wine. (16.5)
