Tasting Note

92   2009  Carlisle  Papera Ranch Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)   3/31/17  ($44)

100% Zinfandel   15.4% alc 779 cases
Color: Deep black cherry garnet. (3.0) Bouquet: Loads of tart blue and red berries (raspberry, cherry and currants) complemented by herbal spices (eucalyptus, oregano and other cooking spices). (3.5) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent fruit and acidity. Silky mouthfeel with lip smacking tartness. (3.5) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but fruit is not as expressive. (3.0) Finish: Very spicy and long, but tart. (3.0)
Overall: Very spicy and tart for Papera, making it more complex than usual, but the fruit is not as lush and pretty. Still shows the amazing old vines character and silkiness in the mouth that define this wine. Tart and savory makes it an excellent food wine too. A very solid excellent that borders on outstanding. Drink now and in the next few years. (16)
