Tasting Note

95+   2005  Carlisle  Tom Feeney (Montafi) Ranch Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)   3/16/14 ($40)

89% Zinfandel, 11% Mixed Black Varieties (Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Petite Sirah)    15.9% alc
Color: Very deep garnet with no browning or clearing. (3.5) Bouquet: Tar and eucalyptus nuances with deep, rich black cherry and Zinberry fruit. (3.0) Body: Heavyweight with excellent fruit and acidity. Has smooth, significant tannins and slight heat, but balanced with a viscous, silky mouthfeel. (3.5) Flavor: Multi-dimensional, spicy fruit explodes in the mouth. Fantastic! (4.0) Finish: Long and delicious with just a hint of heat. (3.0)
Overall: Very rich and concentrated Zin fruit with wonderful structure supporting it all. Interesting spice and tar nuances complement. A fantastic Zin! Does show a hint of heat, but you really have to pay attention to notice it, which is quite admirable considering the alcohol content. Drinking great now, but could even improve in the next 2-3 years as the structure smooths out more. (17.0)
