Tasting Note

89   2013  Domaine de Cambis  Rock de Carignane (St. Chinian)   9/25/15  ($18)

100% Carignan   13.5% alc
Color: Purple-black ruby. (3.5) Bouquet: Sweet black cherry and black raspberry with some animal fur/game and sticks/forestal nuances. (3.0) Body: Light heavyweight with excellent fruit and acidity. Tangy mouthfeel that coats. (3.0) Flavor: Parallels bouquet, but not quite as giving with submerged tannins adding bitterness. (2.5) Finish: Parallels bouquet, showing some tannins but long. (3.0)
Overall: A little restrained at present, but has top notch old vines Carignan character. One of the best I've had from St Chinian. The combo of game/forestal nuances interwined with expressive old vines fruit is compelling. The fruit here is somewhat reminiscent of old vines Mencia. Great value. (14.5)
