Tasting Note

92  1995  Chateau Calon Segur   1/1/13 ($70)

  12.5% alc
Color: Very deep garnet, just slight browning, no clearing. (3.5) Bouquet: Forestal with mint, watercress and other herbs. Big and dusty with cassis and black plum. (3.5) Body: Heavyweight with excellent fruit and tannins. (3.5) Flavor: Menthol and eucalyptus in the mix. Big, but not as expressive as the bouquet. (3.0) Finish: Parallels flavor with menthol-infused dried black currants lingering. (3.0)
Overall: Big and very well put together with tannins that should propel it forward for another 5+ years. Shows cassis and black plum fruit with serious herbs (menthol, mint, eucalyptus, etc.) and dusty St. Estephe terroir. More expressive than the last time I had this more than 4 years ago, but still a little restrained. Drink now with a 2-hour decanting or give it another 3-4 years. (16.5)
