Tasting Note

86    2003 Quinta do Alqueve Tradicional     9/24/06 ($8)

Charming black cherry fruit in a light, easy-going package, but manages to have a very pleasing bouquet and flavor. The fruit is reminiscent of a Tuscan Sangiovese, but has a style that seems more French than Italian. Good acidity makes it lively and a little oak adds to the flavor. This is relatively simple and a little light, but is so charming, food friendly and easy to drink that it puts me in a generous spirit. Made from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Trincadeira and Periquita. At 12.5% alc, it bears little resemblance to overblown, over-extracted New World wines. A simple, Old World pleasure. The 2002 version of this was equally satisfying.
